01.06.2009: 0615 LT: Posn: 13:33.2N – 050:29.0E: Gulf of Aden.
Five armed pirates in a white coloured skiff approached a tanker underway. Master increased speed, activated high pressure fire hoses, mustered crew, contacted coalition naval forces and commenced evasive manoeuvres. When skiff around ten meters away from the vessel, the pirates opened fire with automatic weapons. The robust anti piracy measures, resulted in the pirates aborting the attempt. Later a coalition warship arrived at location.

About eight robbers armed with long knives boarded a bulk carrier at anchor from stern. They entered into the engine room and tied-up the oiler. Robbers stole engine spares and escaped. The oiler managed to escape and reported to captain. No injuries.

Five robbers armed with a knives boarded a general cargo ship at anchor. They took hostage a duty watchman, tied up his hands and stole ship's stores. D/o did not get a response from the watchman and raised alarm. The robbers jumped overboard and escaped with stolen stores. Port control informed.

Ten robbers in a boat attempted to board a container ship at anchor. Duty crew spotted the robbers, raised alarm and crew mustered. The robbers aborted the attempt upon hearing the alarm. Port control informed.

04.06.2009: 2240 LT: Posn: 10:18.7N – 075:31W, Cartagena anchorage, Colombia.
Two robbers armed with knives boarded a general cargo ship at anchor. The robbers attacked a safety watch man who rushed into the accommodation and requested the duty officer for assistance. Master informed coast guard who came onboard for investigation. Robbers escaped. No injuries to crew. Ship’s stores stolen.

06.06.2009: 0010 UTC: 2.5 nm east of Takoradi breakwater, Ghana.
Three robbers armed with knives boarded a bulk carrier at anchor. They tried to open the forecastle store. Duty AB spotted the robbers and informed the bridge. Alarm raised crew mustered. Seeing crew alertness robbers jumped overboard onto a waiting boat and escaped.

Five pirates in a speedboat armed with guns approached a tanker underway and fired upon her. Master increased speed, took evasive manoeuvres, ship's whistle sounded continuously, contacted coalition warships and crew activated fire hoses. Pirates aborted the attempt due to the evasive action taken by the tanker.

Four pirates armed with guns in a speed boat fired upon a bulk carrier underway. Master increased speed, took evasive manoeuvres, contacted coalition warships and crew activated fire hoses. Pirates made several attempts to board the ship and later aborted.

09:06.2009: 0324 UTC: Posn: 3:53.7N - 009:32.3E Douala anchorage, Cameroon.
16 robbers armed with guns and knives boarded a refrigerated cargo ship at anchor. They attacked ship’s crew, damaged communication equipment and stole ship’s and crew cash and properties. Three crew members were injured. Master reported the incident to port authorities but no help was given. The following morning at 0745 lt, a military boat with officials came to investigate.

Armed pirates boarded a product tanker underway. They disabled the communication equipments, stole money and escaped. The 3rd officer was injured in the attack. Authorities contacted and arrived six hours after the incident.

10.06.2009: 1420 UTC: Posn: 18:41.8N - 058:01.0E, Off Ras Al Madrakah, Oman.
Ten pirates armed with guns and RPG in two speed boats chased a bulk carrier underway. Master raised alarm, increased speed, took evasive manoeuvres, sounded ship's whistle and crew activated fire hoses. Pirates attempted to board the ship using portable ladder. Master continued with the evasive manoeuvres and crew threw wooden and iron pieces to deter the pirates from boarding. The pirates showed hand signals to stop the engines and fired at the accommodation. After 50 minutes of attempted boarding, pirates aborted the attack and proceeded towards their mother vessel. Incident reported to Oman coast guard and coalition warships.

10.06.2009: 0545 UTC: Posn: 04.01N, 006.48.6E: 20 nm Off Nigeria.
Five heavily armed robbers in a boat attacked a bulk carrier at anchor. Robbers boarded the vessel using rope attached to a hook. The robbers fired several warning shots and threatened to take the master hostage. 35 minutes later, the robbers left the vessel with the ship’s and crew’s cash and crew properties.

Armed pirates attacked, boarded and hijacked a general cargo ship underway.

12.06.2009: 0300 LT: Posn: 22:14N – 091:42E, Chittagong anchorage, Bangladesh.
Four robbers boarded a bulk carrier at anchor whilst another four robbers waited in the boat. Robbers climbed onboard using hook and line and threatened the crew with knives. Robbers escaped with ships stores.

Two skiffs were detected on radar by a chemical tanker underway. Tanker made evasive manoeuvres; increased speed warned other ships on VHF Ch.16 and contacted coalition warships. Later, skiffs aborted the attempt.

Speed boats approached a bulk carrier underway. Ship took evasive manoeuvres and prevented the boarding.

Four speed boats with 5-6 persons in each boat, armed with automatic weapons approached a tanker underway. Tanker made evasive manoeuvres, activated fire hoses. Later, the speed boats aborted the attempt.

14.06.2009: 1700 LT: Posn: 12:33.5N - 043:29.5E: Bab el Mandab, Red Sea.
Several speed boats were spotted in the vicinity of a LPG tanker. The speed boats picked up speed and started to cross the tanker’s bow. The boats came very close to the tanker and opened fire with automatic weapons. The tanker continued to make evasive manoeuvres and prevented the pirates from boarding.

14.06.2009: 1435 UTC: Posn: 12:35N - 043:28E: Bab el Mandab, Red Sea.
Several skiffs chased a LNG tanker with intent to board. Tanker enforced anti piracy measures and prevented the boarding.

15.06.2009: 1305 LT: Posn: 12:58N – 048:27E, Gulf of Aden.
One skiff approached an oil tanker underway at a speed of around 20 knots. At around ten meters distance from the tanker, the pirates fired several shots with guns and two RPG rounds. Master mustered all crew, increased speed, carried out evasive manoeuvres, fired parachute flares and informed Iranian warship in the vicinity. After about 20minutes the pirates gave up the attempt and move away. The Iranian warship was in attendance. Later a coalition helicopter arrived at scene. Ship moved away without any casualties and damage.

30 pirates in three speed boats armed with guns and rocket launchers attempted to attack a bulk carrier underway. Ship raised alarm, sounded whistle, took evasive manoeuvres, crew mustered and activated fire hoses. Pirates aborted the attempt due to evasive manoeuvres and the high voltage cables around the ship.

While reading the forward drafts from the jetty the OOW of a berthed bulk carrier was robbed of his personal belongings. The OOW called for help but the robber managed to escape by jumping into the water.

Armed pirates in skiffs chased a crude oil tanker underway. Ship raised alarm, sounded whistle and took evasive manoeuvres. Crew mustered and activated fire hoses. Pirates aborted the attempt due to evasive manoeuvres and the repeated call via VHF Ch 16 to the coalition warship in the vicinity.

Armed robbers boarded a container ship using hooks and lines while another two remained in the boat. They threatened the OS with knives and tied him up with ropes. Robbers stole ship’s stores and escaped.

22.06.2009: 1600 LT: Posn: 01: 08N, 103: 35E: off Nipa Shoal, Singapore straits.
Seven pirates, in a small wooden boat armed with automatic weapons approached a salvage tug underway. The crew immediately retreated into the accommodation and locked themselves. Emergency alarm sounded. Master reported to Singapore port control. Three pirates boarded the tug and tried to enter the accommodation but gave up after 10 minutes. they left the tug and were reported to have headed south. Crew safe. Nothing stolen.

22.06.2009: 0550 UTC: Posn: 13:33N - 050:19E: Gulf of Aden.
Four skiffs with pirates armed with guns and RPG chased a general cargo ship and opened fire at it. Ship increased speed, made evasive manoeuvres, contacted coalition warships in the vicinity and released dunnage bundles along with sharply cut empty drums. Vessel also threw sawdust over side which resulted in the pirates’ visibility being hampered. In the meanwhile coalition warships were in attendance and the pirates aborted the attack. The coalition warships stopped the skiffs and confiscated the weapons.

Pirates in white hull skiffs armed with guns and RPG approached a crude oil tanker from the stbd side and fired RPG rounds towards the tanker. Tanker raised alarm, activated fire pumps and contacted warships. A warship advised tanker that it was proceeding to assist. On seeing the warships the pirates aborted the attack.

Two robbers in a small boat attempted to board a bulk carrier at anchor. Alert crew raised alarm, whistle sounded and crew mustered. The robbers aborted the attempt and escaped. Pilot station informed.

Five pirates armed with long knives boarded a general cargo ship underway. They stole crew cash and personal belongings and escaped in a small boat.

Eight pirates armed with long knives boarded a general cargo ship underway. They held hostage AB and 2/O on watch. Pirates stole cash and crew belongings and escaped in a small boat.

27.06.2009: 0040 LT: Posn: 02:47.1N - 105:07.6E, Off Pulau Mangkai, South China Sea.
Six pirates armed with knives, crowbars and batons boarded an LPG tanker underway. Master, 2/O and duty A/B negotiated with the pirates not to harm anyone and gave everything as demanded by them. The pirates tied them up, stole their personal belongings and cash and escaped in a canoe craft. Alarm raised, SSAS activated and crew mustered. No injuries to crew.

27.06.2009: 2200 UTC: fairway buoy, Lagos, Nigeria.
Armed robbers attempted to board an anchored bulk carrier using hooks and ropes. Noticing the robbers the ship’s crew tried to drive away the attackers. One robber managed to board but was forced back. In the attempt to board the robbers fired automatic weapons on the ship injuring three crew members. The injured were later sent ashore for medical treatment.

29.06.2009: 2330 LT: Cochin oil terminal: India.
While discharging alongside at the oil terminal, in heavy rain, D/O noticed some movements on the forecastle deck. He ordered the deck watchmen to check. Upon arrival they noticed three robbers stealing ship’s stores. Realising they have been noticed, robbers jumped overboard into a waiting boat and escaped with ship’s stores.

Four armed robbers in a boat came close to a bulk carrier at anchor. Two robbers boarded and were cutting the ship line when the alert duty watch man sighted and shouted at the men and also reported to the duty officer. One robber approached the duty watchman with a long knife. The duty watchman ran away and the ship’s alarm was raised. Robbers escaped. No injuries to crew and nothing stolen.

12 armed pirates in a boat attempted to board a general cargo ship underway. Due to the quick action and anti-piracy measures by the master and ship crews, the pirates were unable to board and aborted their attempt.
