Acts of piracy

02.08.2009: 2317 UTC: Posn: 03:55.461N – 006:37.321E: Bonny river, Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Heavily armed pirates in two speedboats, seven in each boat approached and opened fire on a bulk carrier at anchor. The vessel immediately heaved anchor and proceeded to open seas for safety reasons. One crew injured.

02.08.2009: 0130 LT: Posn: 02:51.65N – 105:06.12E, South China Sea.

Five pirates on a boat armed with knives boarded a tug boat underway. All the crew mustered and managed to chase the pirates back into their boat. One crew slightly injured.

03.08.2009: 2245 UTC: Posn: 05:28.44N - 005:04.41E, Escravos anchorage, Nigeria.

Five robbers wearing masks armed with automatic guns in a speed boat boarded a refrigerated cargo ship at anchor. They opened fire and kidnapped five crewmembers and escaped. The remaining nine crew were not injured and they sailed the ship to open sea.

03.08.2009: 1500 UTC: Posn: 13:46.50N – 050:42.30E, Gulf of Aden.

Ten heavily armed pirates in two boats fired upon a bulk carrier underway. The pirates fail to board the vessel due to evasive action taken by the master. All the crew and the ships properties are safe.

04.08.2009: 1310 UTC: Posn: 13:32N - 048:50E, Gulf of Aden.

Eight pirates armed with automatic guns in a 7-8 meter long, blue coloured wooden boat, approached a general cargo ship underway at 15-17 knots. They fired upon the ship and attempted to board her several times. Master raised alarm, increased speed, took evasive manoeuvres, and activated SSAS, contacted coalition warships. Pirates aborted the attempted attack due to the effective anti-piracy measures. A coalition helicopter arrived at the location at 1341 UTC.

09.08.2009: 1340 LT: Punta Arena anchorage, Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Robbers approached and boarded a launch carrying six ship’s (LPG tanker anchored) crew ashore. The 10 robbers wearing masks and armed with guns fired warning shots and boarded the boat. They stole crew personal belongings, cash, seaman’s book, extra gasoline, damaged communication equipment and escaped. Later, local fishermen assisted the crew and landed them ashore.

12.08.2009: during midnight hrs: Haldia port, India.

Whilst berthed, robbers boarded the bulk carrier unnoticed and stole ship spares from the engine room spares locker and escaped. The robbery was discovered the next day when the 2nd engineer went to look for spares and discovered the scattered empty boxes.

14.08.2009: 0320 UTC: Posn: 12:35N – 047:25E, Gulf of Aden.

Five pirates armed with automatic guns and RPG in a speed boat fired upon a bulk carrier underway. Master took evasive manoeuvres to deter the pirates from boarding the ship. A coalition helicopter arrived at the scene after 40 minutes and the pirates moved way. One crew injured. The master was instructed to rendezvous with a coalition warship, which sent some troops and a doctor to treat the injured crew.

15.08.2009: 0345 LT: Posn: 01:18.9N – 104:16.18E, Malaysia.

Three robbers in a small fast wooden boat boarded a product tanker at anchor. Duty crew sighted the robbers and informed D/O who raised the alarm. The robbers escaped upon hearing the alarm. Nothing stolen. VTIS Singapore informed.

15.08.2009: 0230 LT: Boma anchorage, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Two robbers armed with sticks boarded a refrigerated cargo ship at anchor. Duty crew spotted the robbers and raised alarm. Upon hearing the alarm, the robbers jumped into the water and escaped. Traffic control informed.

16.08.2009: 1250 UTC: Posn: 06:17.3N – 054:41.2E: About 370 nm ENE of Hobyo, Somalia.

Two skiffs launched from a mother vessel, chased a general cargo ship and opened fire with automatic weapons and RPG. Master enforced anti piracy measures and contacted the authorities for assistance. Due to the effective preventive anti piracy measures enforced, the vessel escaped from the pirates.

24.08.2009: 0515 lt: Posn: 17:02.5N – 082:23.6E: Kakinada, India.

Six robbers on a fishing boat approached a chemical tanker at anchor. Two of the robbers tried to board the vessel from starboard side midships using hooks. The duty officer raised alarm, sounded the foghorn and reported to the port control. The crew all mustered and the robbers aborted their attempt.

26.08.2009: 0130 LT: Moin anchorage, Costa Rica.

Two robbers boarded a container ship by using hooks. Duty watchman alerted the master and crew. On noticing the crew, robbers jumped overboard and escaped without stealing anything. Local authorities informed.

26.08.2009: 0829 UTC: Posn: 13:08N – 048:45E: Gulf of Aden.

Armed pirates in a skiff chased and fired upon a general cargo ship underway. Alarm raised, crew mustered, evasive manoeuvres made and distress signal sent on VHF Ch. 16. A warship and a military helicopter arrived at location to render assistance. Ship continued passage to destination port.

27.08.2009: 0500 LT: No.5 berth, Apapa port, Lagos, Nigeria.

Four robbers boarded a chemical tanker at berth and threatened the duty watchman with gun. The robbers stole ships properties and escaped by boat. The local authorities informed. No one injured.

28.08.2009: 1950 UTC: Ciwandan port, Indonesia.

While berthed, four robbers armed with knives boarded the vessel from a motor boat. They attempted to open the door to the engine room. Duty watchman noticed them and raised alarm. On seeing the alert crew, the robbers jumped overboard and escaped. Authorities informed.

30.08.2009: 1055 UTC: Posn: 01:09.1N – 103:36.9E, Nippa anchorage, Singapore Straits.

Five robbers armed with two machine guns in a boat attempted to board a bulk carrier at anchor. The robbers used hooks attached with ropes to board the ship but were noticed by duty crew who raised the alarm. Robbers aborted the attempt upon seeing the crew alertness and fled in a NE’ly direction. VTIS Singapore and ships in the vicinity informed.
