01.12.2009: 0930 LT: Posn: 12:10N – 063:32E: Around 1200 nm NE of Mogadishu, Somalia.
Pirates in a skiff armed with guns chased and opened fire on a tanker underway. The pirates attempted to board from port side but failed and then tried to board from stbd side. The use of water jets from fire hoses and evasive manoeuvres made the pirates abort the attempt.

01.12.2009: 2300 LT: Posn: 18.33N - 072:23W: Port au Prince Anchorage, Haiti.
Duty officer heard some noises on the poop deck and upon investigation found three robbers already in the process of leaving in their boat after lowering some ship’s stores. Authorities informed and a coast guard boat arrived at location.

02.12.2009: 1409 LT: Posn: 14:26.4N – 054:18.2E: Gulf of Aden.
A general cargo ship underway spotted a mother vessel at a distance of 6nm. The mother vessel was seen to launch two skiffs, which approached the vessel at a speed of 14 knots. Vessel raised alarm, increased speed and made evasive manoeuvres. The skiffs approached the vessel on port and stbd side. Ship sent distress alert and activated SSAS alert, contacted coalition warship and authorities for help. The skiff on port side approached the vessel close to 15 meters and fired automatic weapons. Ten minutes later, the skiff aborted the attempt and regrouped with the mother vessel. |

05.12.2009: 1800 LT: Posn: 22:12.6N – 91:46.4E: Chittagong anchorage, Bangladesh.
About 12 robbers armed with long metal bars in a small boat boarded an anchored tug. They stole ship’s stores and escaped. Local authorities informed.

06.12.2009: 0624 UTC: Posn: 10:50N – 060:00E, Off Somalia.
Armed pirates attacked and boarded a fishing vessel underway. They took hostage 29 crewmembers and hijacked the vessel.

07.12.2009: 1343 UTC: Posn: 00:27N – 061:39E: off Somalia.
Pirates in two skiffs chased and fired automatic weapons and RPG on a bulk carrier underway because of which a fire broke out on deck. The vessel increased speed and made evasive manoeuvres and sent distress message. The crew managed to contain the fire once the skiffs moved away. Later, the skiffs aborted the attack and moved away.

Two skiffs chased a tanker underway and opened fire with automatic weapons. The tanker enforced anti piracy preventive measures and escaped the attack.

08.12.2009: 0325 LT: Posn: 06:13.62S – 108:28.29E: Balongan anchorage, Indonesia.
Four robbers boarded a tanker from poop deck. They were spotted by the duty watchman who immediately informed the bridge duty officer. Alarm raised and crew mustered. On seeing crew alertness the robbers escaped in a waiting boat.

Four pirates, armed with a gun and spear in a speed boat chased a general cargo ship. Vessel took anti piracy measures and prevented the boarding.

14.12.2009: 2100 LT: Posn: 12:02.S – 077:11.6W: Callao anchorage, Peru.
Duty officer onboard an anchored container ship raised the alarm when he failed to get a response from the anti piracy duty AB on deck. Crew went forward to investigate and found the AB lying on deck with his hands and feet tied up and minor shoulder injuries. The robbers had broken into and stolen ship stores from the forecastle store. Upon hearing the alarm the robbers escaped.

15.12.2009: 2150 LT: Puerto la Cruz: Venezuela.
Duty seaman onboard a container ship spotted six robbers in a boat attempting to board the vessel. Alarm raised and crew alerted. The robbers aborted the attempt and moved away.

15.12.2009: 0000 UTC: Posn: 05:38.8N – 000:02.9E, Tema roads, Ghana.
Ten robbers armed with machetes boarded a container ship at anchor via the anchor chain. They held three-duty crew, threatened them with the machetes at their throats and tied them up to bollards. The robbers stole ship’s property and stores from forward store and escaped. Port control informed. A patrol boat was sent to the location.

16.12.2009: 1735 LT: Callao anchorage: Peru.
Robbers boarded an anchored vehicle carrier via the anchor chain and by cutting the hawse pipe cover. They stole ship’s stores and escaped. Incident was only discovered after the robbers had left the vessel and when ship’s crew went forward to heave up anchor. The incident may have occurred when all crew were assembled in the accommodation during port authorities inspection.

16.12.2009: 1700 LT: Posn: 02:45.70S – 042:37.11E, Off Somalia.
About nine pirates armed with guns in a small boat attacked, boarded and hijacked a dhow underway along with its 13 crewmembers.

17.12.2009: 1929 UTC: Kochi anchorage: India.
Two robbers boarded an anchored tanker via the anchor chain. The robbers broke open the forepeak store and stole ship’s stores. Ship’s crew noticed and chased them away. Seeing the crew the robbers jumped overboard and escaped.

18.12.2009: 1823 LT: Posn: 09:17.8N – 014:49.3W: Off Conakry, Guinea.
Pirates armed with machine guns in a speedboat approached and fired upon a chemical tanker drifting. The tanker, increased speed, enforced anti piracy measures, reported to authorities and prevented the pirates from boarding it. No injuries to crew.

18.12.2009: Gulf of Aden.
Pirates attacked and hijacked a fishing vessel with its 15-crew members. The fishing vessel hull is red and white in colour. It is believed that the pirates may use it as a mother vessel to attack other vessels. All ships are advised to be cautious.

20.12.2009: 0345 LT: Posn: South of Tanjung Ayam, Singapore Straits.
Four robbers armed with long knives boarded a tug and took hostage the oiler. Alert duty AB saw the robbers and informed the duty officer who raised the alarm. Seeing the alert crew the robbers escaped with stolen ship’s stores.

22.12.2009: 1710 UTC : Posn: 03:55.5N - 098:46.1E: Belawan anchorage, Indonesia.
Five robbers armed with knives boarded a container ship unnoticed. They tied-up the hands and feet of the duty AB and stole ship’s properties and ship’s stores. Alarm raised and crew alerted. Robbers escaped with stolen items. Incident reported to coastal authorities.

27.12.2009: 1230 LT: Posn: 08:28N – 061:01E: Off Somalia.
While underway, a container ship detected a white-hull fishing vessel with two small craft on each side. The fishing vessel lowered one craft, which chased the ship for around 45 minutes before aborting the attempt due to preventive measures.

Pirates attacked and hijacked a chemical tanker underway. The hijackers are sailing the tanker to an undisclosed location in Somalia. Further reports awaited.

Pirates attacked and hijacked a bulk carrier underway. The hijackers are sailing the vessel to Somali coast. Further reports awaited.

About six small unlit boats chased a chemical tanker underway. Pirates from one boat attempted to board. The tanker made evasive manoeuvres and enforced anti piracy measures and prevented the boarding.

28.12.2009: 0020 LT: Lagos anchorage, Nigeria.
Robbers armed with automatic weapons attacked and boarded an anchored general cargo ship. They assaulted and fire at the crew. Three-crew were injured. The robbers stole crew personal properties and ship’s stores and equipment. Master’s attempt to contact authorities and agents for assistance were futile. The IMB PRC received the distress message from the ship and relayed to the Nigerian authorities requesting to render assistance for the injured crew. At dawn, agents sent a boat to evacuate the injured crews’ to shore for medical treatment.
